Daytrippers Pan-Disability Football Tournament / October 2011

Posted

Date: Sunday 16th October 2011

Venue: The London Soccer Dome, Greenwich

This is our sixth annual football tournament and each year we add something different to make the day extra special. With 28 teams arriving early ready for a day full on back to back tournaments the atmosphere was truly electric. Travelling from all over the UK, our eager footballers got into the spirit and competed in two tournaments each for the under 12s or under 16s. Inspired by seeing the skills of the footballers in past years we ran a special skills challenge alongside the normal tournaments adding to the tension as teams literally stole the trohpy with a matter of seconds on their rivals! The day ran smoothly with everyone getting a chance to stop at the half way point for a healthy lunch to boost energy levels and have a quick team tactic talk. The day rounded off with an awards ceremony where the final winners were announced, including players of the tournament for each age group, and team of the tournament who won their whole team a brand new football kit. Even if a team didn’t win in their category every player got the chance to collect a medal and have a team photo before going home exhausted by happy!

Thank you again to everyone at The London Soccer Dome for all their hard work on the day. Daytrippers would also like to extra a warm thanks to Ray Coleman from Feltham Bees for his tireless organising, and also to Ismar Uzeirovic for once again photographing the day.

Make sure you get in contact if you want to join us next year! [020 7758 0030 or enquiries@daytrippers.org.uk]

I am writing to say thanks for organising a great tournament again at the London Soccerdome. I’ve been involved in running Invicta Valiants SEN-disability FC for many years and the Daytrippers tournament has always been one of the best organised. It was good to see some wheelchair users playing in the teams. I spoke with one of the carers/coaches who explained how they were able to include wheelchair users in matches. It is a great way of including wheelchair users in playing, when in reality the chances of wheelchair users finding a place where they can play in wheelchair football teams are pretty remote. I spoke with the Kent FA afterwards about including wheelchair users in Kent Pan Disability League matches, which our teams play in, however although the Kent FA support inclusion, they were not optimistic about this being a successful way of including wheelchair users, health and safety etc. Any chance that you may be able to give me a contact of the teams who had wheelchair users in the teams, as I’d like to find out how their local County FA view wheelchair inclusion, or please forward them my contact details. I’ve also emailed Ray Coleman at Feltham Bees, who I’ve known since we first played in the tournaments there in 2004, to request the same info. Thanks, David Ramzan – Invicta Valiants, Ashford, Kent. Hi David,
Thanks for your post. It is always good to hear that an event we organise is both fun for the young people involved, but also useful as a networking tool for the adults that attend as well. We have been very interested in the inclusion of Wheelchair users in football and one of Trustees was particularly keen in make the sport more accessable for all… I will mention your comment to him but in regards to those that played this year, Ray will certainly be able to assist you there.
I hope you can join us again next year!
